AME Q&A: Why should I encourage my young adult to become an entrepreneur?

By Mike Cheney, AME Program director

First, we should start by defining entrepreneur.

According to Google, “entrepreneur” comes from the 13th century French verb entreprendre, meaning to do something or to undertake.  I think of the term as referring to someone who takes responsibility and authority over an enterprise and its results – usually someone who owns a business.

AME Q&A: I’m in college. Can I still be a part of AME?

You may think that apprenticeship and higher education are opposites – choose one or the other. But not so! Depending on your chosen field, a college education may be necessary, and that doesn’t leave mentorship out of it.

Mentorship can happen concurrently with college studies, as it has for decades in fields such as law, medicine, and politics. With some students, mentorship will provide all the training a young person needs to be prepared; with others, a college degree may be necessary.

Making a Comeback

By Mike Cheney, AME Program Director

In the 250 years since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, when the fragmenting of the family into individual units of labor began in earnest, the concepts of apprenticeship and mentorship have largely disappeared from the American culture.

The common practice of children being trained up for their lives’ work by parents, relatives and like-minded friends has been replaced by another sort of vocational orientation which might or might not teach the basic skills of the job but which severely lacks the training in wisdom and knowledge of the foundational type, the wisdom of God.
